Day 26

Day 26 - What does your significant other do that makes your heart melt?

Brian kisses me before bed every night and kisses me in the morning when he leaves for work.  He kisses and hugs his boys several times a day.  He tells me I'm a good mother, even on rough days when I feel like I am at a breaking point.  He makes me smile, and believes in my abilities.  He supports me in all of my endeavours.  He still brings me flowers, not as often as he did when we were first engaged, but he always seems to know when to bring a little something home to boost my spirits.

Day 25

Day 25 - Ideal day of "me time"

Hmmm, this is one that I have had in mind for a while.  I still have a Christmas gift that needs used, so I am thinking my perfect "me day" would be a mani/pedi and full body massage.  Following this, a date night with just me and the hubby :)  We don't do a lot anymore as a couple and it is nice whenever we get some alone time to ourselves :).

Day 24

Day 24 - What's your favorite eco-friendly thing to do?

I can't really pick a fovorite, I feel like our family is going greener every day :).  I have been cloth diapering my boys since they were both a couple of months old. We recently started recycling, planted a garden and I have been 'shampoo' free for about 4 months now.  I typically wash my hair with baking soda and apple cider vinegar and purchased an all natural shampoo bar this past weekend at the herb fair in Huron, Ohio.

All of our new herbs

 Lime Thyme

 Bee Balm

 Apple Mint

 Banana Mint

Orange Mint

Day 23

Day 23 - Favorite blog post you've written before this challenge.

I recently did the 2nd annual flats and handwashing challenge and blogged about my experience without a washer or dryer while cloth diapering.  Being able to share my experience with family and friends and the blogger community was wonderful.  I learned a lot and plan to continue handwashing at least a couple of times a month.  I also enjoyed posting when I found out I was pregnant with my first son.  What an amazing 3 yrs it has been.

Day 22

Day 22 - When I was a kid, what did I want to be when I grew up?

If I remember correctly I wanted to be a veterinarian.  I have always loved being around animals big and small.  When my brother and I were growing up we had several animals in our parents home ie:  salamanders, frogs, fiddler crabs, hermit crabs, fish, snakes, chinchilla, parakeet, cockatiel, finches, dogs and a cat.  Our home was like a zoo :)
What have I become?  I am a proud wife and mommy to two incredible little boys, and I teach yoga.  I also crochet, knit, sew and am going to try needle felting and fiber spinning :).

Day 21

Day 21- Most recent words of wisdom that stuck with you.

"Don't look a gifthorse in the mouse."  My mother said this to me the other day.  People who love you will do anything and everything they can for you, so be grateful you have these people in your life.

Day 20

Day 20 -  Photo of you as a young child

I think I was close to 3 in this picture.  I still have this little dress, but it will likely be handed down to a granddaughter :)  I am pretty sure we are destined for a family of testosterone, ha ha!

Day 19

Day 19 - Something I'm proud of since the last few days
Well, I am a few days late with these posts, but I would say I am most proud today of the fact that my 3 year old was so brave for his surgery.  Yes, he was scared and it took some coaxing, but all in all he did a really great job a couple weeks ago.  I am also proud of how well I held myself together and stayed strong for him.  There is nothing as scary as watching your child be gassed for surgery, at least I haven't been through anything more scary than this.

Day 18

Day 18 -

When I get the opportunity, I love to make almond milk.

Soak 2 cups of almonds overnight.  place in blender with 1 cup of water.  add a total of 8 cups water, then pour in cheesecloth or sieve. May have to do this step a couple of times.  Take pulp and place in a baggy in your freezer, you can add this to many dishes for a healthy kick :).   Add cinnamon, and vanilla or a little agave or honey to taste, chill and enjoy :)  Almond milk can be used in many wonderful recipes, and you can do this really with any nut.  Hope you enjoy :)

Check out some of the other recipes on the linky in my side bar.

Day 17

Day 17 - 3 things you are proud of about your personality.
1.  I am outgoing, I love that I can go into a crowd and within minutes I have sparked up a conversation.  I think as I have aged the more outgoing I have become.
2.  I am creative, I learned to crochet when I was 14 yrs old, I learned how to knit about 8 months ago.  I love learning new ways to be creative.  I started sewing 2 yrs ago and am going to try my hand at needle felting and spinning.
3.  I keep busy, whether it's taking my boys to the park, the zoo or out in the yard we are outside at least a couple hours a day almost every day.  There are exceptions here, when we run all week long I may decide to do an indoor movie and play day, but even mommy needs an occasional break.  ;)  I am looking forward to the boys starting school in the future, and boy scouts, t-ball and all those fun memories that come along with it.

Daniel Has Surgery

As some of you know Daniel went in on Thursday for a Meatoplasty,   This is a 5 minute procedure to enlarge the urethral opening, they could have dilated it while he was awake, but I feel it would have been much more traumatic and I am glad we were not offered that choice.   All in all it was a good day, we took Daniel out on a mommy, daddy date to Greaters the night before while Joseph stayed at home with grandma. We wanted to be able to enjoy some time with Daniel and explain again what was going to happen the following morning.
We were hopeful that we would have a restful night, but Joseph is teething and unfortunately was up from 3:30 in the morning on.  At 8:00 we got in the car to go to Children's Hospital in West Chester.  Daniel took a couple of special toys with him to the hospital, his teddy and bumblebee the transformer.  He was a little nervous as soon as he stepped through the front doors but once in the preop room did wonderful.  We even got to sit on the floor and play with action figures (something he did not have any of until that afternoon) and he decided he really liked Spiderman and R2D2 the robot from Star Wars.

Then they took us to the induction room.  This is where we would have to say good bye for a few minutes and where mommy's heart broke.  As a parent you have to put up a strong front for your children no matter how scared you are.  Daniel sat on daddy's lap to get his gas mask on.  Daddy had to hold around his arms, and mommy held his head still.  I watched his eyes, he was so frightened; his eyes were red and full of tears. Yet I still had to say that everything was okay and mommy and daddy were right there.  Within 30 seconds his eyes became heavy and his little body was limp.  We placed him on the gurny and kissed him and let him know we loved him and would see him soon.  I held it together until I got to the conference room, then that strong front collapsed and I wept.  I have never felt so helpless, and I hated having to put him through that.
Within 10 minutes Dr. Alam was in the room with us, he told us that Daniel was great, and was coming out of his sleep.  About 10 minutes later we were in the recovery room with our boy, it took him a good while to calm down, but he was playing with his brother within 20 minutes of coming home :)

Day 16

Day 16 - Fitness Guru or Couch Potato?
I would love to say I am a fitness guru, but I am not.  This is not to say that I don't keep busy.  I take my kids outside to play, walk at the parks or the Zoo almost every day.  I wish I had more of an exercise routine for myself, and would love to practice yoga more often. I have tried to do yoga with the boys in the same room, but I get through about 2 postures before they begin jumping and climbing over and under me :).  We are rarely at home, but on the few days we are, yes I become a BIG couch potato and enjoy a day on the couch with the boys watching movies or playing in the living room while I relax and crochet or knit.

Day 15

Day 15 -  Post a photo you took that you're proud of

How often do you get a photo op like this? :)

Well, maybe twice

Day 14

Day 14 - 15 Tips to get through Life

1.  Don't take yourself too seriously, if you do you are going to miss out on so much fun.
2.  Laugh with your whole being every day.  A belly laugh is so good for you!!!  Laughing releases endorphins and is contagious, laugh with others and laugh with yourself :)
3. "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"  I hear this one a lot, always be grateful and do not criticize others' generosity.  They would not be doing it if they didn't want to.
4.  Play!!! When we age we think we have to stop playing and become an adult, when we have a family we forget what it's like to play and have to relearn.  Play with your children, show them how fun imagination and creativity can be.
5.  Explore, show your family the world, even if it's in your own back yard.  Talk to your children about the earth, plants, animals, bugs and all things in nature.  Teach them to respect the planet and be grateful for all life.
6.  Dance and Sing.  Take time to be silly, turn up the stereo and dance around the house or sing.  I find this is a great way to cut loose and play with the kids.
7.  Listen to your body.  If you are doing something that does not feel right, then trust your instinct and stop!
8.  Be kind to your body: Nourish it, exercise it, and make sure you give it plenty of rest.  It is the only one you get.
9.  " Lokah Samastah Sukino Bhavantu" - May all beings everywhere be filled with peace, and may my thoughts, words and actions contribute to that peace.  In other words be kind to al creatures human or animal.  We all have a purpose on this earth.
10.  Take the road less traveled, allow yourself to tread in unfamiliar waters.  There is an amazing world out there so go check it out :)
11.  Don't hold a grudge.  This is a biggie for so many of us.  We get hurt to a point where we think it's impossible to forgive, but forgiveness takes the weight off of your heart and allows peace to come to you.
12.  Get up and get moving, do not spend your life sitting at a computer or in front of the TV.  Take a walk and enjoy life
13.  indulge on occasion.  It is okay to eat a piece of candy, have expensive coffee or buy a new pair of shoes just don't overdo it.
14.  Make time for yourself even if it's only 5 minutes a day.

Playing Catch up :)

Day 13 - Where Do you see yourself by the end of the year?

I can see myself adding a couple more yoga classes to my schedule, right now I am teaching 2 classes at You Do Yoga in Cincinnati, I teach a Postnatal yoga class at The Blue Cocoon in Montgomery, OH. and will be adding a new prenatal yoga class on June 30th.  I would like to have items from Earth Mother Moon Baby Boutique available to purchase at craft shows and at The Blue Cocoon.  I see  my children gaining more and more knowledge and our family growing.  I guess we will have to wait and see what happens :)

Day 12

Day 12 - Worst injury I've ever had and how it happened

I have had very few injuries, none really worse than the other.  I was a gymnast and a diver in high school.  I jammed my low back doing a back flip dismount off the beam during our regional gymnastics meet my Senior year, and that same year I came out early on a back 1 1/2 pike dive and hit both of my heals on the diving board. Both injuries were extremely painful, but as a gymnastics coach at almost every level for 10 yrs, these were the mildest injuries I witnessed.

Daniel Surgery Set

As some of you may already know my Daniel is going in for surgery on Thursday the 14th.  Time is set for sometime between 7:30 am and noon.  We will find out for sure on Wednesday.
Daniel is having a short procedure done called a Meatoplasty.  His Urethra is closing up and creating irritation and pain from time to time during urination, so he needs to have the opening dilated.   Our Dr. said this is fairly common in circumsized males, but not noticed until potty training.  We have a wonderful Dr. named Dr. Alam at Children's Hospital who will be taking care of Daniel.  He said it is a quick procedure, about 5 minutes long, but he will need to be knocked out.  Last night we got to take a tour of the same day surgery unit, to try and help Daniel and mommy and daddy prepare for what will be going on this Thursday.  Daniel did a wonderful job and was very brave letting him touch and smell some of the things around the hospital, and he even let us get a picture of him with his hat and gas mask on :).

Can't say I'm looking forward to all of this, but glad to be getting it taken care of now instead of waiting.  We will be sure to keep everyone posted on his surgery and recovery.
Tomorrow Daniel goes to his regular Peds Dr. to have his post op physical done.

Day 11

Day 11 - Best day of your life

I would love to say that of everything I have done and seen, having my children were the best days.  It is hard to chose just one, but if I had not met my husband I would not be the woman I am today.  He has been my rock through hard times and he is my best friend.  Brian and I have been married a little over 4 yrs, he has supported me in every aspect.  I finished college and went through my first yoga cert. while we were engaged, he listened, encouraged and even participated in my training.  He has given me a wonderful home, a love unmatched and two of God's most beautiful gifts, our boys :)  I am so blessed to have him in my life and love him very much.

Day 10

Day 10 -  Art piece you would have in your home if money was no object ?

I love art, but I don't necessarily love any specific piece or artist that I would want in my home.  I was an air force brat for 23 yrs, in that time I was able to see and experience places most people never get to see.  I love the European architecture, marble, stone walkways, and churches.  I would not say that I want specific art in my home, but I do hope that someday my children and husband get the opportunity to see and experience some of the incredible things I have.  Here are some places I would like my boys to see :

German Christmas Market

Netherlands

Baden Baden
Germany

Weiss
( white church)
The way the cherubs were positioned, it looked like they were always watching over you.

Day 9

Day 9 - Talk about a cooking disaster

Well, the most recent would be making my 3 year old's birthday cake.  He loves carrot cake, so I decided to make it from scratch, which is normal for me when I bake.  I enjoy using fresh ingredients and really creating something yummy, I am not a box cake mix person.  Well, after two hours trying to bake with both of my boys running through the kitchen, sometimes helping, sometimes upset I finished mixing the cake and put it in the oven.  I looked at the counter and found my eggs for the batter still sitting behind the mixer, and was unsure  how much baking soda and baking powder I had added if any at all.  The cake came out and tasted decent, but was soooo thin.  I ran out of time and ended up buying the box mix.  I did however make my own cream cheese frosting and marshmallow fondant.   Did I mention I also had to decorate this sucker and this was only my second time using fondant!  He wanted a Peter Pan and Captain Hook cake, here is how it turned out:
My brother shares a birthday with my oldest boy, so I made a cake for him too.

The Peter Pan Cake, and oh boy was it sooooo yummy :)

Day 8

Day 8 - What's your guilty pleasure?
I think for the most part, this boils down to food and drink.  Ha ha, whenever I have a spare buck I hit up Starbucks.  I rarely got to have it when I was pregnant with both boys and it is just so yummy :).  I have 3 favorite drinks....Cappuccino, Cinnamon Dolce Latte, and Pumpkin Spice Latte.  I normally have enough cash from teaching to go once or twice a week, sometimes I have to pull out the bank card, but I really try not to do that too much.  I am also a chocoholic.  You hand me any chocolate (prefer dark) and I will devour it.
I have a good mommy friend whom I go out with at least a couple times a month and our mommy date spot is Starbucks right between our homes :)  They know who we are and most of the workers could probably start making up our drinks as soon as we step foot in the door.  We sit in a couple of comfy chairs from 7 to 9 pm and enjoy our coffee, conversation and knitting together.

Here are just a few of my projects, all used patterns except the purple pants.

Day 7

Day 7- A picture of something that makes you happy
I have to post 2, one of the two little men in my life and one of yoga.  I love both for different reasons and can't imagine my life without them.

Daniel and Joseph
my loves

Two months postpardum after my first son was born.  I don't practise nearly as much as I should, but teaching and sharing my love for yoga makes me a very happy woman.

Day 6

Day 6- Nicknames?

I have two nicknames, My Uncle David has always called me Kojak, this was because I was pretty much bald until I was 3, and then my Uncle Eddie called me Squee, but I am not sure what the meaning of that one is :)
Since this is my regular blog I wanted to add that tomorrow we will be taking our son D to see a urologist, not my idea of a wonderful start to the day, but I know he is in good hands at Children's Hospital.  Hope we get things taken care of quickly and smoothly.
My little guy J made us all so proud today.  He is just 15 months old and made peepee on the potty twice today!!  We celebrated with mommy and big brother doing the potty dance, clapping and cheering for little brother :).  What an awesome way to end our day.

Day 5

Day 5 - Short term goals this month and why those goals.
1.  Get together freezer meals.  I am not the worlds best cook, but I feel like if I can get a weeks worth of meals prepared then maybe I can give my family a good meal every night instead of 2 nights a week.
2.  Finish projects for sewing and get them to The Blue Cocoon.  I have been sewing moon pads, nursing pads and diapers for a few months now, need to buckle down and get them finished so I can have a family cloth 101 workshop the end of the month :)

3.  Get busy in the garden every day.  We just planted flowers and veggies and I would like to actually enjoy what they produce this season.

4.  Swim lessons for the boys.  We are members at Coney Island this year and I want to get the boys involved in swim lessons.
5.  Get my boys out as much as possible, God gave us the earth and sky to enjoy I want to make the most of it.

Monday, June 4, 2012

Day 4

Day 4- What is the meaning behind my blog name?
I think it's pretty self explanatory, but my blog name is a journal for my family.  This is a place where I can keep track of my family and how we grow together.  I enjoy documenting all the places we go, and the people we see.  I want my boys to be able to look at this and know that we were always doing something special, even on rainy days, we build forts, play puzzles, make art. I love going back and reading about how we went from being two to a family of four :).  We hope someday that our family will grow some more, and I will try to always keep this blog up to date.

12.  I do not have a green thumb, but I love to garden
