WOW! Time really does fly, especially when your family is growing and changing every day. This has been a great first month as a family of four, albeit challenging at times. So, here is a little update on our first month.
Joseph Robert Kandell was born March 3, 2011. He will be one month old at 1:58 tomorrow morning. He was a big boy at birth and is already sporting some of his 3-6 month clothes :) When Daniel was two months old, he was still fitting some newborn and 0-3 month clothes...most with room to spare. Joseph is staring to loose some hair now too, straight across the top, almost as if he was wearing a headband. His umbilical cord stump finally came off a little over a week ago. He is cooing, reaching a little for his toys and sometimes grinning now; he is also a little snuggle bug. Almost every time I put him down, even if he is fast asleep he will wake up and cry till he is close to mommy or daddy again.
The cuddling is so sweet, but it is hard at night, he doesn't want to go in his bassinet once he joins us in bed...last night he slept from about 10:30 pm till almost 5:30 this morning. Seven hours straight!!! We both fell asleep while I was nursing him, but as soon as I woke up and moved him to his bassinet he started to squirm and grunt and moan, put him in my arms and all was quiet for the rest of the night. I know this sleeping pattern won't last, but boy it would be great if it did.
Daniel has had a rough adjustment this first month, and I know he has a ways to go till he understands that nobody can take HIS place in our hearts, and that both him and Joseph hold a special place in us. I am beginning to notice a few improvements though. The weather is becoming nicer which is making it easier for us to get out of the house more often. The last few days he has even started napping again, without putting up a fight. I can't imagine what having a new person, clinging to mommy is like for him...I wish I knew how to make the transition easier for him, but all the things that I try, like asking him if he wants to do a puzzle or read or color while I nurse he says no to. I know that things will get easier as time goes on and I learn how to share more time with both boys. I have found the Moby wrap very useful when Daniel wants to play and Joseph does not want to be alone. I have both hands pretty free with him wrapped up, so I can wear Joseph and let him sleep while I play with Daniel at the same time.
